Measurements
62How do we measure the length of a pencil? How do we know how much a big fish weighs?
In this hub, powered by www.tenmarks.com - (Online Math Programs), we learn about standard and non standard units that are used to describe and measure quantities. We also learn to estimate measures, and use and convert customary and metric units of length, capacity, mass, and weight.
To understand this concept better, let us break it into smaller concepts. These concepts are as follows:
1. Customary Units of Capacity and their Conversion
In this topic, we learn about customary units of capacity and to convert between them. Below is a sample video which teaches you to solve a typical problem based on this topic.
- Customary units of capacity are: Cup, Pint, Quart, and Gallon
- Use benchmarks and compare with the volume to be measured
- Cup is used for small volumes, pint and quart for intermediate volumes, and gallon is used for large volumes
2. Metric Units of Length and their Conversion
In this topic, we learn about the metric units of length and to convert between them. Below is a sample video which teaches you to solve a typical problem based on this topic.
- Metric units of length are centimeter, meter, and kilometer
- Use benchmarks and compare with the length to be measured
- Centimeter is used for small lengths; meter for intermediate lengths and kilometer is used for long distances or lengths
3. Metric Units of Mass and their Conversion
In this topic, we learn about metric units of mass and to convert between them. Below is a sample video which teaches you to solve a typical problem based on this topic.
- Metric units of mass are: gram and kilogram
- Use benchmarks and compare with the mass to be measured
- Gram is used for small mass and kilogram is used for large mass
4. Temperature
In this topic, we will learn to read the thermometer in both Fahrenheit and Celsius scales along with standard benchmarks. Below is a sample video which teaches you to solve a typical problem based on this topic.
- Fahrenheit is a scale used to measure temperature
- To use a thermometer, find the top of the red line
- Read the number next to the end of the red line
- Determine whether it is cold or warm by comparing with the benchmarks
